Algonquin · Driveway replacement

A driveway that failed at the apron, not the field

The homeowner initially thought the entire driveway needed to be replaced. After inspecting the driveway, we found that the main section was still in good condition and the actual problem was limited to the last two metres near the street, where the sub-base had washed out beneath the apron. We removed the damaged section, rebuilt the base, and poured new concrete to blend with the existing driveway, saving the homeowner from an unnecessary full replacement.

The old patio drained toward the house

The previous slab fell about half an inch back toward the sliding door, so every heavy rain put water against the threshold. We demolished it, regraded the sub-base to fall away from the building, and poured a new patio with the slope built in. The door has stayed dry through two winters.

Colour chosen outdoors, not off a chart

The owner had picked a colour from a brochure indoors and it read far redder in daylight. We poured a sample panel in the yard, left it a week, and let them look at it in morning and evening light before committing. The finished patio is two shades cooler than the original pick.

Rutting that was a base problem, not a paver problem

Two wheel tracks had sunk about an inch across a five-year-old paver driveway. The pavers themselves were fine. We lifted them, found the base had never been compacted in lifts, rebuilt it properly, and relaid the same stone. Only the bedding sand and a handful of chipped units were new.

A pool deck too hot to stand on

The deck was structurally sound but finished in a dark, smooth topping that got painfully hot and slick when wet. Replacing it was not necessary. We resurfaced with a lighter textured overlay, which dropped the surface temperature enough to walk barefoot and gave it grip at the coping.

The wall was leaning because nothing drained

A four-year-old block wall had rotated forward at the top. There was no drainage stone and no pipe behind it, so every rain loaded it with water pressure it was never built to hold. We took it down, rebuilt with a proper gravel chimney, a drain to daylight, and geogrid into the slope.
